To set up your Step2 planter as a self-watering plant container, do not drill any drainage holes on the bottom. Instead, drill a fill hole around the top rim and a seep hole on the side to prevent overflowing the reservoir (indented guide holes provided). To activate the self-watering feature, insert a wicking material through the holes in the internal tray so each piece reaches the bottom, then add soil and plants. Fill the sub-irrigation water reservoir via the fill hole until it reaches the seep hole, which will prevent overflowing the reservoir. As time goes on, the water will move up the wicking material as needed, maintaining even moisture levels and promoting healthy root growth.
