In less than nine months, I’m getting married and becoming a part of another family. So many emotions have come over me as each day passes and I get closer to becoming a Mrs. I’m excited for all the new adventures that married life entails, but most of all I’m thrilled to gain another mom and dad. I’ve mentioned before that I come from a single parent household and, for the past 25 years, my mom has done everything she can to take care of me, in addition to taking on the role of both parents. She did a wonderful job and I wouldn’t be who I am today if it wasn’t for her guidance and support.
When I first met my future mother and father-in-law, I was so nervous; I really wanted them to like me and know how much I cared for their son. From the moment we met, we hit it off. I felt like I was already talking to my family. They’re generous, wise and personable; all that I could ever ask for in my future in-laws. Not only have they made me feel included in their lives, but they’ve also included my mom in family celebrations and outings. I guess you could say my mom and I are a package deal.
It’s truly a blessing that our families get along and we’re able to spend so much time together. I never imagined that I could ever call someone else “mom” and I really never thought I would have the opportunity to finally call someone “dad.” It makes me smile knowing I have such a bond with my fiancé’s parents. After all, they’ve made my fiancé into the man he is, the man that I fell in love with.
This is a hectic and chaotic time, as we plan the wedding, but honestly, we couldn’t have made it this far without the support and help of our parents. As I walk down the aisle, I will know all this stress will be worth it and I won’t be sad (even though I know I’m going to cry) because I’m not leaving my family to join another, we are combining our two families together. And I’m gaining another mom and dad!
