To set up your Step2 planter as a self-watering container, do not drill any holes in the bottom. Instead, drill a fill hole around the rim and a seep hole on the side to prevent overflowing the internal water reservoir. To activate the self-watering feature, insert a wicking material through the holes in the internal tray so each one reaches down to the bottom. Add soil and plants, then fill the internal water reservoir through the fill hole until it reaches the seep hole. Over time, water will move up the wicking material, maintaining moisture without the need for frequent watering.
